DEPARTURE

Another trip to the airport!
Another departure!
Another goodbye!

People think this should be easier now,
I’ve had to send him off so many times before.
I can’t explain it - there’s something different
When they wear a uniform.

He’s a United States Marine!
He has earned the title with sweat and sacrifice,
He has paid the price!
He wears his uniform with Pride.

The boarding calls begin.
Oh Lord, please make them walk slow.
Row after row they are called,
Closer we come to hearing his row.

I hold his hand and we joke--
Maybe he will have a good looking blonde
by him in his row.

Now comes the call,
Now boarding row 16.
No! No! No!
It’s much to soon.

We hug each other tight.
“I love you mom,
Everything will be all right.”
I have to let him go.

He starts down the boarding ramp,
He turns, he looks me in the eye-
Once again I see that keen confidence
of a nineteen year old
United States Marine!

With slight of hand he waves,
Once again he says,
“I love you mom,
Everything will be all right.”
He disappears out of sight.

The tears now come,
The knot in my stomach is so, so big.
I go to the window,
I watch that big bird take off and fly,
With my son inside.

I go home,
Once again the candle
in my window comes on,
The yellow ribbon is on my tree.

Dear God, protect my Marine,
Give him strength and wisdom,
Help him to always trust You.
May he always feel Your
presence watching over him.
Help him to always see Your light
and know it will always lead him home.

Dear God, take care of my Marine,
because God you see---
In my eyes
He’s just a boy to me.
